成功主持过国家攀登计划基金、霍英东青年教师基金、跨世纪人才基金、国家自然科学基金委面上基金及数学天元基金、全国博士后甲级基金、教委归国留学人员基金、教育部优秀年轻教师基金课题,973燃烧与污染治理项目子题、973黄河项目子题、973城市生态项目专题、北京市自然科学基金人工湿地污水处理工程重点项目以及一系列横向项目。在国际国内核心刊物上发表论文一百多篇。
在系统生态学和生态经济学方面提出了宇宙(Cosmic exergy)的概念,确证了生态系统最根本的自然资源是宇宙,而非太阳能,进而提出基于 值(Embodied Exergy)概念的生态价值评价体系,改进了系统生态学创始人Odum所提出的能值方法。
在环境哲学方面,于1994年在《哲学研究》上发表“关于环境问题的哲学思考”一文,对环境哲学的形上学基础、方法论和功用提出了系统性的看法,以中国传统的“天人合一”为核心构建和谐哲学,归纳出三种环境境界,在理论界引发多年论争,促成了环境哲学作为国家二级学科的地位。所提出的环境哲学思想和环境社会经济系统模型理论已作为十多个核心条目载入《中国大百科全书》环境科学卷(修订版)。
