本书的特点是宗旨明确、体例严密、收词精当、注释准确、举例简练。

本书以收录规范的普通话词语为主，兼收部分有生命力的文言词语和方言，以及习见的百科词条，共五万六千余条，还附有插图、示意图和表格共48幅。
